Off-page Optimization
We covered on page SEO in Part One of this two part series, but now it's time to look at what you can do outside of your website to boost your position in the search results. This consists of link building, which can be done a variety of ways. Before you start looking at building links, however, it's a good idea to understand what kind of link building methods exist and how they affect your search engine rankings.
One Way Link Building
When it comes to SEO value, one way links are the best way to go. Search engines look at these one way links, where someone links to your website without a reciprocal link, as a vote of confidence. Obviously, you have something of value if people are going to link to you!
Getting other people to link to you without needing anything in return can be tricky if you don't know how to go about it. There are quite a few methods that can be very effective.
Article marketing: Submitting articles with your link in the bio will give you one way links and often from some very decently ranked sites. Also, if you`ve submitted your articles to an article directory, other sites and blogs can pick them up and you`ll gain one way back links from them, as well.
Great content: If you have truly incredible content, people will be linking to it. Make sure that you keep your standards high and provide both search engines and people with great information.
Directories: There are hundreds of blog and business directories that you can submit your site to. While some are simply not worth your while, others have great PageRank and can be a decent way to build up some one way links.
Publicity: Let people know that you have something new up on your site. If it`s newsworthy, then you can send out press releases and emails to build up some interest. Submitting press releases to PR sites will help build up one way links and anyone who picks up the story will also give you these valuable links.
Two Way/Reciprocal Link Building
Linking to someone who links back to you is probably the most common way to get links, particularly when you are just getting started online. These are not as valuable from the SEO point of view as a one way link, but that doesn't mean you should avoid them. Every bit helps!
Asking someone to add you to their site once you already have a link to them is a very effective method of getting two way links. Most people are happy to reciprocate, but try to approach only sites that are similar in content. A website on puppy chow that links to a mountain climbing blog is not going to be viewed as highly by the search engines.
Three way link building
Three way link building is a method that many webmasters use to give links while still creating one way back links. Basically, Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C and Site C links to Site A. Everyone wins and everyone has a quality one way link to their site.
These are the three main types of link building that you can use. While one way backlinks are definitely more preferable, that doesn't mean reciprocal links are useless. Whenever possible look for ways to make the one way link work for everyone, such as with the three way link building method. This way, everyone gains and you`ll find it`s easier to pitch than just asking someone to link to you without any link back to them.
