Building a new website can be a difficult task in its own right, and the challenge of getting it found can be even harder. Here are five quick fire tips to help get your web site noticed on the search engines.
1. Be thorough with your Keyword research. Find out those that are important to your business
Getting the keywords right is the single most important part of any campaign. Using the search engines, find out what your competition is like for any given phrase and find out what they are organically marketing. Make sure that your keywords are appropriate to your business. There are tools on the market that will help you with your keyword research such as Wordtracker. Google also has its own keyword analysis tool aim at Pay Per Click customers.
2. Make your site easy to navigate
Not just by humans, but also for the search engines. Try to adopt an any-page from any-page technique with your site menus. Plan your site before you start to build it and don't forget vital Sitemaps, both in HTML and XML formats.
3. Make the content of your site relevant
This stage I like to call the "Common Sense" stage. Content is the single most important part of any successful Search Engine Optimisation campaign. Content should be relevant to the page title, description and tags and should be consistent throughout the page. This process effectively puts you in control of where your site appears within the Searc Engines, maximising exposure.
4. Include keyword rich, page titles and meta data
The TAGS on your page hold a key to key word prominence. To help maximise SEO on your pages its vitally important to include your keywords in your Page Titles, Descriptions and Keywords tags. Also make sure that your body content contains your keywords - but don't go 'stuffing' crazy! Don't forget traditional marketing, good content with a clear sales message will increase your conversion rates.5. Making every page unique
The search engines enjoy reading duplicate content as much as humans do. It's very important to avoid duplicate content. Rumours are afoot about Googles duplicate content penalty, although we don't believe that its as stringent as once thought. Remember, however, that the golden rule in SEO is to build your sites for your visitors and would they want to read the same content over and over? Keep adding new pages to your site, target the pages to new markets, and make every page unique. Don't duplicate content.
