CONTROVERSIAL SEO TECHNIQUES - Business

Listed below are some controversial search engine optimization techniques that should be used with caution, or even avoided altogether. These may have some technical and legal considerations that should be thought of.

1. Duplicate Pages

Search engines ignore duplicate pages at most times. In very extreme cases, they may ban a site altogether.

2. Invisible Text

It is proven that search engines consider the use of text that is the same color as the background color as spam. You must refrain from using invisible text as much as possible.

3. Keywords In Comment Tags

If any, of the major search engines index comment tags, so you must not waste time adding them for optimization purposes at all.

4. Keywords In Hidden Value Tags

There are keywords that have hidden value tags are considered spam by all of the major search engines, so you must not waste time with this practice in your SEO techniques.

5. Keywords In Style Tags

There are a very few search engines that index the content of tags, so do not waste anytime by applying as such.

6. Link Farms And Link Exchange Programs

Most search engines consider link farms and link exchange programs as spam, as they have only one purpose, which is to artificially inflate a site's link popularity, by exchanging links with other participants in the site.

Be careful not to be confused on link farms and link exchange programs with reciprocal linking. While reciprocal linking is the exchange of links with individual sites, and certainly an accepted technique for improving your site's link popularity, it should still be practiced with caution.

7. Links Only Pages

It is generally recommend to add text descriptions to link pages and site maps. For some search engines like AskJeeves, it has been known to kick out links only pages.

8. Meta Refresh Tags

Most meta refresh tags set for under 30 seconds are considered as spam by almost all search engines. In effect, most search engine optimizers use JavaScript redirects for their site.

9. Tiny Text

Most major search engines consider tiny text (for example, font size 1) as spam mail. To some extent, use of tiny text is fine. But search engines don't like web pages that use a lot of tiny text in their site. The reason is some webmasters have already used it to fool search engines by "hiding" dozens of keywords in a web page for SEO purposes.

10. Cloaking

This is the practice of serving search engine optimized pages to search engine spiders, and while doing that - serving un-optimized pages to site visitors.

This is one of the most controversial strategies in search engine optimization nowadays. As most search engines publicly state that they consider all cloaking to be spam mail. Many professional search engine optimizers though have been using cloaking for years, with much considerable success.

While there is no conclusive proof yet that search engines do indeed ban sites that use cloaking, it is strongly recommended that you refrain from cloaking.
