Search engines look at backlinks as other sites voting "for" your site, and that is what will propel your site up into the standings. Avoid using services that give you thousands of backlinks overnight, it seems, because that may draw a human review of your site - and that is rarely a good thing to have happen.
You'll get the most out of your backlinks if they are relevant to your site topic. The more relevant backlinks you have, the higher you'll be able to rank.
SEO is not for the get rick quick crowd, and it takes work and patience to be successful with it.
